Artificial intelligence is moving from dashboards to pipes. A new push by Itron, a utility-technology firm, and Microsoft shows how quickly that shift is under way.

In January 2026 the pair expanded their partnership to embed AI in Itron’s “Intelligent Edge” platform. The aim is simple: process data where it is produced, not after it travels to distant servers. For water utilities, that means decisions taken in seconds rather than hours.

The change is more than technical. Traditionally, utilities have relied on delayed analysis, poring over data after faults occur. Edge-based AI promises something closer to reflex. Leaks can be detected as they form; pressure can be adjusted before pipes fail; disruptions can be contained before customers notice. In theory, reliability rises as costs fall.

This reflects a broader shift in infrastructure. AI is no longer a pilot project but part of core systems. Water networks, often old and under strain, face growing pressure from climate change and urban demand. Real-time intelligence offers a way to stretch ageing assets further.

Yet the obstacles are stubborn. Much of the world’s water infrastructure still runs on legacy systems that do not easily accommodate new software. Integrating AI adds layers of complexity, not least in cybersecurity. Utilities must also find the money and skills to manage these systems, both in short supply in many regions.

Even so, the direction is hard to miss. As computing moves outward, from cloud to edge, so too does decision-making. The Itron-Microsoft tie-up suggests that the future of water management will be less about analysing yesterday’s data and more about acting on today’s signals. The pipes, it seems, are getting smarter.
